Human Rights Education on Right to Food and Human Rights Education
About this event: First Global UN Model 2009
Related to country: Guinea
About the book: "Human Rights and Social Justice in a Global Perspective: An Introduction to International Social Work"

Translations available in: English (original) | French | Spanish | Italian | German | Portuguese | Swedish | Russian | Dutch | Arabic

Section of participants after five day training of trainers

The definition of food security now most commonly used, that of the 1996 World Food Summit, bears considerable resemblance to the definition of the right to food. Yet a right-to-food based approach to food security is distinct from other approaches to reducing hunger and malnutrition and complements food security considerations with dignity, rights acknowledgment, transparency, accountability, and empowerment concerns.

It is based on commitment to the value of human dignity and makes the individual an agent of change in a way that enables him or her to hold governments accountable and to seek redress for violations of his or her rights. A right-to-food approach is not based on vague and replaceable policy goals subject to periodic redefinition, but on existing, comparatively specific and continuously becoming more precise obligations undertaken by governments. Therefore, the right to food cannot only be regarded as a means to achieve food security, but must be seen as a wider, more encompassing, and distinct objective in itself. Realizing the right to food should, furthermore, be part and parcel of rights-based approaches to development that aim to implement all human rights obligations which States have committed themselves to under human rights law.

Conscience International has facilitated the right to food training in Kabala, Portloko, Kambia and Makeni in the Northern part of Sierra Leone.

The objectives of this training was to create the awareness amongst farmers, Community based organizations and market women on the practical realization on the right to food as been reaffirmed during the 1996 world summit facilitated by FAO, “every person have the fundamental right to be free from hunger and have access to safe and nutritious food” as enshrined in the social and economic rights.

Conscience International facilitated several focus group discussions, workshops and symposiums.

Section of students of the Leumas Vocational Centre after the session on human right education.

Human Rights Education (HRE) is the key to securing human rights in Sierra Leone, and indeed the world.

The “Right to Education” encompasses many of the principles outlined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) and Convention on the Rights of the Child, and as a starting point argues for compulsory consensus that education in and for human rights is essential and can contribute to both the reduction of human rights violations and building of free, just and peaceful societies. Human Rights Education is also increasingly recognized as an effective strategy to prevent human rights abuses. HRE embraces this right and advocates for human rights approach in all learning, so that human rights values and principles can be applied in our everyday lives. Specifically on education the Preamble states:

….The General Assembly proclaims this Universal Declaration of Human Rights….. to the end that every individual and every organ of society, keeping this Declaration constantly in mind, shall strive by teaching and education to promote respect for these rights and freedoms…..
The African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights of the African Union considers that Human Rights Education is itself a human right within the framework of the fulfilment of the right to education, which is one of the priorities of the Millennium Declaration. Articles 17 (1) of the African Charter similarly state: “that every individual shall have rights to education”.

Conscience International conducted a human right education session for the students of the Leumas vocational Training Centre on the rights for women.

What can you do for us and with us?

Rights Education (HRE) is a long-term process. We are asking partners to assist us in building the competence of Conscience International to conduct effective HRE.

HOW DO I SEE VOLUNTEERISM - I. V DAY
Related to country: Sierra Leone

Translations available in: English (original) | French | Spanish | Italian | German | Portuguese | Swedish | Russian | Dutch | Arabic

All over the world, millions of people are plaque with some of the global issues that affects communities, which in retrospect has been regarded as the MDG’s. Ranging from Pakistan to Latin America, Asia to Europe and Africa.

In short, this is in cognizance of the varying problems of citizens in various countries. Ie the need for an individual to STAND UP and do something meaningful without being paid, forced or coerced in doing a task/job. This concerns various aspect of individuals, be you skilled, graduate or with an experience; because people often see the need to do something in turn for a pay or reward. As the first nature of the human mind is ‘love thy self first before any other’.

Yes, this is true, but in real situations; it is always necessary for individuals to become national heroes and heroines in their small locality as a legacy in the daily rhythms o life. i.e. do something today or help in eradicating poverty, reverse the spread of HIV/Aids.
In short, you become a VOLUNTEER to attain some of the MDG’s before 2015.
A VOLUNTEER with a focus of initiating and using your skills to facilitate the well being of others. As ‘education is only effective when it is shared’. This clearly shows, what you as an individual has done for your community irrespective of being rich or poor. As long as, you are skilled and experience there is a ‘light at the end of the tunnel’.

Others often complain of not having a well placed job after graduating from college or university especially in third world countries. Yes, it is true and an unbearable situation after going through the rigors of university life; but one thing lacking – EXPERIENCE. Because with experience, it clearly tells your employer and also builds your personal self that; there is more which you know part from what was initially learnt in school.

Hence, the need to make a mark in history, by offering your community what you have and they in turn share out their views as it complements another; ‘sharing skills, changing lives’.

Volunteerism, as I see it from the bifocal phase of life endures patient, love, determination and the need to give one self up for what you believe in. i.e. to make the world a better place. Because, it is only when these attributes are shown, then you can succeed in your goals. From all indications the possibilities of life cannot be achieved easily without some strings attached. And for a volunteer to work earnestly is to care and love the job he/she is doing.

With much to say, I believe this day marks a milestone in history and a clarion call for all to take an initiative to b a volunteer. And be among the 8,100 and more UNV’s working and serving communities around the world to attain not only the MDG’s but to create a peaceful world. As volunteers can transform themselves with their various changing communities in which they work.
With this, I believe VOLUNTEERS can be partners in development or VOLUNTEER FOR DEVELOPMENT in your small community or country. As the world is still a better place, with all its treachery that surrounds it; only if we can STAND UP as a VOLUNTEER to make it safe for the sake of posterity.

I AM ISAAC MANSARAY A SIERRA LEONEAN AND I STRONGLY BELIEVE THAT AFRICA WILL COME UP IF WE UNITE AND RECEIVE STRENGTH FROM THE OUTSIDE WORLD. WHAT MAN HAS DONE ANOTHER CAN DO IT. IF AFRICA IS KNOWN FOR POVERTY AND WE WANT TO CHANGE IT WE MUST BE CREATIVE AND BELIEVE IN OURSELVES.

AFRICA WILL RISE, AND THROUGH WYC2008 WE WILL RETURN WITH A DIFFERENT MIND FOR DEVELOPMENT.

TENSION MOUNTS IN KONO AS GOVERNMENT DELAYS COMMISSION REPORT
About this event: 4th World Youth Congress - Quebec City 2008

Translations available in: English (original) | French | Spanish | Italian | German | Portuguese | Swedish | Russian | Dutch | Arabic

CAMPAIGN FOR JUST MINING (CJM)

PRESS RELEASE

TENSION MOUNTS IN KONO AS GOVERNMENT DELAYS COMMISSION REPORT

CIVIL SOCIETY DEMANDS AN IMMEDIATE RELEASE OF THE REPORT OF THE JENKINS-JOHNSTON COMMISSION OF INQUIRY TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC

The Campaign for Just Mining is worried about the unexplained delay of government in releasing the report of the “Jenkins-Johnston Commission of Inquiry” set up by government to look into last December’s disturbances in Kono that left two civilians dead and many more injured. Our worry and fear stems from the fact that any further delay is a clear recipe for further tensions in the affected mining communities with the continued silence of the government creating room for increased speculation, rumor mongering and provocation. It is common knowledge that the people are tired of waiting for the outcome of the report and therefore demand the speedy release of the report because the nation is yearning for it.

The fear of the affected communities and Civil Society is borne out of the fact that many Commissions of Inquiry have been set up by governments in the past and huge chunks of tax payers’ money used to support their operations; however, most of their reports were never produced; where they were produced, they were not made public, nor were the recommendations of these reports implemented and, in circumstances where the reports were produced and implemented they were done so without the participation of the affected communities or the people in general. We consider these actions as a complete betrayal of the people’s trust in those administrations.

It would be recalled that the government set up the Jenkins-Johnston Commission of Inquiry on 17 December 2007 on a certificate of urgency, and assured the nation that the Commission would complete its work and submit a report within THREE WEEKS; whereas, 14 weeks down the line, the report has only been submitted to the government with neither the affected communities nor the general public having any knowledge about it contents.

We strongly believe that the government that established the Commission has a fundamental constitutional and moral responsibility to explain (without waiting for someone to demand) to the people of this country the outcome of the Commission’s findings. Being mindful of the fact that, the swift intervention of government to establish the Commission helped to pacify growing tensions that were heading to full-blown crisis in the district. We further believe that the earlier release of the report will ameliorate the situation.

The Campaign therefore demands that:-
1. The government makes public the report of the Jenkins-Johnston Commission of Inquiry without any further delay. The nation is yearning for it.

2. Government ensures that the recommendations of the Commission are subjected to stakeholders consultations prior to implementation.

We are with the view that all of these measures will lead to the peaceful resolution of the conflict between Koidu Holdings Limited and the affected mining communities in Kono and contribute to a large extent to human security in the country.

ABOUT THE CAMPAIGN
The Campaign for Just Mining is a coalition of civil society organizations working on mining and environmental issues. It is a platform that advocates for social responsibility, transparency and accountability in the mining and extractive industry, as well as for better living conditions of host mining communities. The establishment of the Campaign was initiated and supported by the Network Movement for Justice and Development (NMJD) in 2000.
